Anyone can do this

If you have a completed manuscript - or are close to finishing your book - then it’s time to think about getting it published. The challenge is that there are so many options out there, and so much conflicting advice. Everybody has an opinion about how to do it, what software you should use, what platform to go with … if you have tried to find help online then you will know what I mean.

I’m a publishing industry veteran, and I know what I’m talking about. I have put together this video course to help you to turn your hard work into an eBook that your readers will love, and that the Kindle store, the Apple bookstore and any other retailer you choose will accept first time.

Work through this short course, step-by-step, and not only will you will have an eBook to be proud of, but you'll also have a skill that you can put to profitable use.

About me

As with any training, you need to be confident that you are learning from someone suitably qualified.

I’m Ed Peppitt, and I have worked in the publishing industry for nearly thirty years.  I started out back in 1992 as a sales and marketing assistant at Letts, publishing and selling those home study guides that parents give to their kids to help them through their GCSEs and A Levels.

Over three decades, I have witnessed the publishing sector change beyond recognition, and have see the industry from all angles. I have consulted for many of the leading UK magazine and book publishers, including Emap, Hodder, Harper Collins and Oxford University Press.

I have written seven books, all published by Hodder & Stoughton, including the Chartered Management Institute’s book about management and leadership skills, which was serialised in the Times in the weeks leading up to publication.

I have led and delivered a series of weekend Masterclasses on self-publishing for the Guardian newspaper, which have become a regular fixture in the Guardian Masterclass event calendar. I’m also the author of the Guardian’s eBook of self-publishing.

I’ve run publishing seminars and workshops to hundreds of delegates, in prestigious venues including The National Portrait Gallery theatre and the RADA Studios in London.

For the last decade, I have helped mainstream publishers to convert their printed titles into eBooks. And I’ve helped self-published authors to get their books published, in printed, electronic and audio formats. So please believe me when I say that I’m an experienced and qualified publisher - and I know what I’m talking about.

Who is this course for?

I've created and written this course primarily for self-published authors. It's not designed to make you a better writer. Nor is this a creative writing course in any way. It's a course where you will learn a very practical skill - taking your completed, edited manuscript and turning it into a perfect eBook file that will be accepted (first time!) by any ebook retailer you choose.

I'm the sort of person who'd rather spend a little longer on a job to get it right. I prefer to use the right tools for the job, and work at something until it is close to being perfect. If that's you too, then this course will suit you very well. I'll teach you, step by step, how to use the same tools to create your eBook that the mainstream publishers I work with use.

There are plenty of other apps you could use that will get the job done more quickly. But they won't get the job done as well. So if you are someone who isn't interested in the publishing process, and just wants to get their book up on Amazon as quickly as possible, even if it involves a few compromises along the way, then this course is NOT for you.

Why Sigil?

I get asked this a lot. Why should I learn to convert my book using Sigil, rather than any number of other applications? It’s a fair question. After all, there are dozens of apps out there that are really easy to use, and that claim to convert a Word document, a text document, even a PDF - in just a couple of clicks.

But there are good and bad eBook conversions, and if you want the Kindle store and Apple bookstore to approve your uploaded eBook first time - then you need a clean, robust and compliant eBook file. And that's what Sigil will deliver.

Besides, almost every mainstream publisher I work with uses Sigil - it is the publishing industry standard. But it's also free! In fact both the software applications we will use in this course - Sigil and PageEdit - are open source and free to download and use.

I want to be clear here. If you are the sort of person who just wants to get the job done quickly, and turn your hard work into an eBook file in a matter of seconds, then this is NOT the course for you. Your best bet is to download an app that will save your Word file as an eBook file, and off you go.

But if you are someone who really values their work, who wants it to look at its best, and who wants their reader to really enjoy the experience of reading your book, then Sigil is the way to go.

(As I write this, I realise that I sound a bit like a salesperson for Sigil. I’m not. I have no connection with the software whatsoever, and have no reason to recommend that you use it other than that it is the most professional eBook publishing software currently available. Besides, it’s free!)

What you will learn
